Patti is a longstanding professional friend of the 'Training Space' and is an experienced expert in informatics, statistics and research design. Over the years, she has acted as an advisor on many national and international studies in both the private and public sectors. Patti is Research Director of Applied Research Ltd., an established research and consultancy company which specialises in using innovative approaches to solving real-world problems.

Her recent work has focused on the identification of effective leaders, assessing organisational stress and developing new measures of workplace engagement. Patti's current collaboration with the Training Space has been on advising on the design of the action research project 'Talkform'.

This new approach to understanding talk in the classroom has been devised by Applied Research Ltd. and is based on the core principle that all classroom interactions should encourage pupils to be independent learners and creative thinkers. The approach has been evaluated in a range of schools by encouraging teachers to look closely at the different patterns of teacher and pupil interactions in various classroom scenarios and this has led to a better understanding of how pupils react and respond as thinkers and talkers as they move through different learning states.

It has become clear that once teachers are able to take real control of their classroom talk strategies then they are able to significantly improve how productive learning and teaching situations are established and maintained during their normal lessons. Using the 'Talkform' approach in the classroom has shown the value of teachers actively shaping the right types of talk in driving standards upwards.
