What are the Small Writing Rainbow Symbols?

The Small Writing Rainbow Symbols are a set of brightly coloured, hard wearing resources for use in all aspects of the teaching and learning process. Designed by Jane Considine, this excellent classroom resource is a must have for every teacher. They are a perfect prompt to assist teachers when modelling writing, and draw the focus of the pupil on the specific lens that they represent from The Writing Rainbow.

This full set of Small Writing Rainbow symbols include visuals for:

The ideas of writing: FANTASTICs

The grammar of writing: GRAMMARISTICs

The techniques of writing: BOOMTASTICs

By using these lenses, pupils will become more confident on the range and repertoire of aspects to showcase in their independent writing.  This approach supports a systems view to teaching writing that can be applied to any text, novel, picture book or film.

Each visual symbol is 9cm in diameter and made of laminated paper which is hard wearing and long lasting. There are 2 complete sets of Writing Rainbow symbols in this pack (54 symbols in total).

The Large Writing Rainbow symbols are a set of 27 brightly coloured classroom resources, measuring 28.5 cm in diameter,  that mirror the writing lenses found on Jane Considine’s Writing Rainbow. By using these lenses, teachers can focus on a particular aspect of the Writing Rainbow. Pupils can then incorporate that lens in their planning and writing activities during the lesson. This allows them to become more confident on the range and repertoire of aspects to showcase in their independent writing.

Teachers can use these icons in a range of ways:

  1. To enable pupils to understand ‘The Three Zones of Writing’.
  2. To make explicit the focus of the sentence teaching.
  3. To provide ‘Deepen the Moment’ challenges to groups or individuals.
  4.  To support teaching, in particular when doing modelled writing.

Please note: A detailed explanation of each of the writing lenses can be found in Jane Considine’s book – ‘The Write Stuff – Transforming the Teaching of Writing.
